Paulius Galaunė was born on January 25, 1890, in Pagelažiai, a village near Ukmergė, Lithuania, and lived a long life, passing away on October 18, 1988, in Kaunas at the age of 98. He was a leading figure in Lithuanian art history and museology during the twentieth century, playing a key role in documenting, preserving, and promoting Lithuanian visual and folk art throughout years of significant political change.
Before Fame
Galaunė went to Saint Petersburg for his education, attending Saint Petersburg State University and studying at the art school led by Nikolai Rerikh, a painter and cultural thinker who greatly influenced artists of that time. This training in one of the main cultural centers of the early twentieth century gave Galaunė both academic depth and practical artistic skills. Returning to Lithuania during a time of national awakening and political change after World War One, he found great opportunities to use his skills in the young Lithuanian state's expanding cultural institutions.
