Biography

Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón was born on February 29, 1972, in Madrid, Spain. He studied at the Real Centro Universitario Escorial-María Cristina, the Université libre de Bruxelles, University Camilo José Cela, and IESE Business School, focusing on economics and public policy, which later shaped his political path. He is married to Begoña Gómez, and they have two daughters.

Sánchez started his political career in August 2004 as a city councillor in Madrid. He was elected to the Congress of Deputies in 2009, representing the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). His profile continued to rise, and in 2014, he became Secretary-General of the PSOE, putting him at the helm of one of Spain's main political parties and making him Leader of the Opposition. His initial time as party leader was challenging, with inconclusive elections in 2015 and 2016 and internal party issues leading to his resignation in 2016. He returned to lead the party eight months later after winning a membership vote against Susana Díaz and Patxi López.

On June 1, 2018, Sánchez succeeded in a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, with backing from Unidas Podemos and several regionalist and nationalist parties. King Felipe VI appointed him Prime Minister the next day, the first time in modern Spanish history that a sitting government was ousted through a parliamentary no-confidence vote. His first government didn't have a formal parliamentary majority, making it tough to pass laws, and he called for a general election in April 2019 after a budget impasse. The PSOE gained 38 seats, its best result since 2008, but still lacked a majority.

After talks to form a government failed, Sánchez called a second general election in November 2019. The PSOE won again, and Sánchez formed a coalition with Unidas Podemos — Spain's first coalition government since the transition to democracy in the late 1970s. His government handled the COVID-19 crisis, implementing one of Europe's strictest lockdowns and later a national vaccination drive. Following major PSOE losses in regional elections in May 2023, Sánchez dissolved parliament and called for a snap general election. Although the People's Party won more seats, Sánchez managed to form a coalition with smaller parties and regional groups, securing a third term as Prime Minister. Since 2022, he has also been the ninth president of Socialist International, expanding his role beyond Spain to the international social democratic movement.

Before Fame

Pedro Sánchez grew up in Madrid during a time of major change in Spain, as the country built its democratic institutions after the Franco dictatorship ended. He studied at the historic Real Centro Universitario Escorial-María Cristina and later pursued advanced studies in economics in Brussels and at Spanish business schools. This equipped him with the analytical tools he used in public policy and governance.

Before gaining national attention, Sánchez worked as a university economics teacher and gained hands-on experience in public administration and city politics. His early years in local Madrid politics from 2004 onward gave him a solid foundation in constituency work and party organization, which was crucial as he rose within the PSOE over the next decade.
