Petr Čech
Czech goalkeeper who holds the Premier League record for most clean sheets (202) and won four Premier League titles with Chelsea, widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.
Biography
Petr Čech, born on May 20, 1982, in Plzeň, Czech Republic, is known as one of football's best goalkeepers. He started his professional journey at Chmel Blšany in 1999, then joined Sparta Prague in 2001. At 19, he became a regular starter and set a league record by not allowing any goals for 903 minutes. This remarkable performance led to his move to French club Rennes in 2002 for €5.5 million, his first international transfer.
In 2004, Chelsea bought Čech for £7 million, a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time. Over eleven years at Chelsea, he became the club's top goalkeeper, with 494 appearances, making him their seventh most-played player. He won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Champions League, and one UEFA Europa League with Chelsea. He also holds Chelsea's all-time record with 228 clean sheets.
Čech's international career with the Czech Republic ran from 2002 to 2016, earning 124 caps, the most in the team's history. He played in the 2006 World Cup and four European Championships in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. His standout performance was at Euro 2004, where he helped reach the semi-finals and was picked for the All-Star team.
In 2015, Čech transferred to Arsenal for £10 million, adding another FA Cup to his achievements before retiring in 2019. He finished his Premier League career with a record 202 clean sheets, cementing his place among the league's greats. After retiring from football, Čech began playing ice hockey as a goaltender for the Haringey Huskies in the NIHL South Division 2, showcasing his athletic talent in different sports.
Before Fame
Growing up in Plzeň after the communist era in the Czech Republic, Čech honed his goalkeeping skills in local youth systems before joining Chmel Blšany's academy. During the 1990s, Czech football was changing a lot after the Velvet Revolution, giving players more chances to join Western European leagues.
His big break happened as Czech football was making a name for itself internationally, with players like Pavel Nedvěd and Jan Koller boosting the country's reputation in European football. Čech's quick move from a regional club to Sparta Prague showed the quality of Czech football development programs during this changing time in the nation's sports scene.
