Biography
Prem Tinsulanonda was born on August 26, 1920, in Mueang Songkhla, in the southern part of Thailand. He started his education at Mahavajiravudh Songkhla School before choosing a military career at the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy. Climbing the ranks of the Royal Thai Army, he became one of the most influential figures in Thai politics and governance in the twentieth century, working in various senior military and administrative roles before becoming the country's top executive.
Prem was Thailand's 16th Prime Minister from 1980 to 1988, a time that saw political stability compared to the turbulent decades before. Under his leadership, the government successfully quelled a long-standing communist insurgency that had threatened the country's internal security. His administration also presided over swift economic growth, helping Thailand emerge as a regional economic player in Southeast Asia. His leadership mixed military practicality with efforts to build civilian political institutions, and he chose not to prolong his term despite political pressure.
After serving as prime minister, Prem became the President of the Privy Council, the group of senior advisors to the Thai monarchy. In this position, he was closely involved with promoting King Bhumibol Adulyadej's royal ideology and development projects. He faced criticism, especially during the political unrest of the mid-2000s, when ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his allies accused him of playing a role in the 2006 military coup and influencing the subsequent interim government. Both Prem and the coup-leading military junta denied these claims.
As President of the Privy Council, Prem served as Regent of Thailand after King Bhumibol Adulyadej's death on October 13, 2016, until December 1, 2016, when Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn was proclaimed King Rama X. At 96, he became the oldest regent in recorded history, surpassing Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold's record. Throughout his public life, he remained active in initiatives related to education, drug suppression, poverty reduction, and national unity. Prem Tinsulanonda passed away on May 26, 2019, at Phramongkutklao Hospital, aged 98, becoming the longest-living Thai prime minister in the country's history.
Before Fame
Prem Tinsulanonda grew up in Songkhla, a southern Thai province known for its unique cultural and political identity. His childhood overlapped with a time of major change in Thailand, as the country shifted from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional system following the 1932 revolution. He went to Mahavajiravudh Songkhla School, a school with strong royalist traditions, before joining the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, the main training center for Thailand's military officers.
His career took off during a time when the Thai military was central and often very influential in national politics. Through his years of service in the Royal Thai Army, Prem earned a reputation for discipline, loyalty, and strong management skills. His experience in command and political savvy helped him manage the complex and often unpredictable world of Thai military politics. Eventually, he became well-known nationally, rising to Army Commander-in-Chief and then to prime minister in 1980.
