Mehriban Alieva
Trained ophthalmologist who serves as Vice President of Azerbaijan and First Lady, making her one of the few spouses of world leaders to hold executive government office.
Biography
Mehriban Arif gizi Aliyeva (née Pashayeva) was born on August 26, 1964, in Baku, Azerbaijan, when it was still part of the Soviet Union. She studied medicine at the well-regarded I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, becoming an ophthalmologist. After completing her medical training, she worked as an ophthalmologist before moving into public life and politics.
Aliyeva married Ilham Aliyev, who became President of Azerbaijan after his father, Heydar Aliyev, passed away in 2003. As First Lady, she got involved in cultural and humanitarian efforts, focusing mainly on healthcare, education, and preserving Azerbaijani cultural heritage. Her medical background influenced many of her efforts to improve healthcare access and quality in Azerbaijan.
In 2017, President Ilham Aliyev created the role of First Vice President for his wife, and she officially took on the position in February that year. This unusual move made Aliyeva one of the few First Ladies in the world to hold a government office while also being First Lady. The role gives her significant authority, including the ability to act as interim president if needed.
Throughout her time in public service, Aliyeva has received many international honors from different countries, including France's Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2010, Poland's Commander with Star of the Order of Merit, and Italy's Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit. She has also been given Pakistan's Nishan-e-Pakistan and Hungary's Commander Cross of the Order of Merit, among others. Her work has aimed at strengthening Azerbaijan's international connections and promoting cultural exchange programs.
Before Fame
Growing up in Baku during the 1960s and 1970s, Aliyeva lived in the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, a time when educational opportunities for women in medicine were on the rise. The Soviet system put a strong focus on science and medical education, offering talented students the chance to attend top schools like Sechenov Medical University in Moscow.
Her decision to study ophthalmology showed the increasing specialization in Soviet medical education. By the 1980s, when she completed her studies, the Soviet Union was undergoing significant changes with reforms starting under Mikhail Gorbachev. Her medical training gave her a solid background in healthcare and patient care, skills that later shaped her approach to public health initiatives as a public figure.
