Biography
Raimonds Vējonis was born on June 15, 1966, and pursued his education at the University of Latvia Faculty of Biology, establishing the scientific foundation that would inform his later environmental policy work. A member of the Latvian Green Party, which forms part of the Union of Greens and Farmers, Vējonis built his political career around environmental protection and sustainable development principles. His academic background in biology provided unique expertise that distinguished him in Latvia's political landscape during the country's post-independence development. Vējonis first entered government service as Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development in 2002, marking the beginning of a decade-long tenure in environmental leadership roles. From 2003 to 2011, he served as Minister of the Environment when the Ministry of Regional Development operated as a separate department, then returned to the combined ministerial role in 2011. His extensive experience in environmental policy positioned him as a leading figure in Latvia's efforts to align with European Union environmental standards and develop sustainable resource management practices. In 2014, Vējonis transitioned to national security matters when he was appointed Minister of Defence, broadening his governmental experience beyond environmental issues. This role demonstrated his versatility and prepared him for higher executive responsibilities. His tenure as Defence Minister, though brief, occurred during a period of heightened regional security concerns following Russia's actions in Ukraine. On July 8, 2015, Vējonis was elected as the ninth President of Latvia, becoming the first Green Party member to hold the presidency. During his four-year presidential term from 2015 to 2019, he represented Latvia on the international stage and worked to strengthen the country's position within NATO and the European Union. His presidency was marked by efforts to promote environmental consciousness at the national level while maintaining Latvia's commitment to regional security cooperation. Following his presidency, Vējonis remained active in public service and sports administration, accepting the position of president of the Latvian Basketball Association in 2020.
Before Fame
Growing up in Latvia during the Soviet period, Vējonis experienced firsthand the environmental degradation that characterized much of the Eastern Bloc, where industrial development often proceeded without adequate environmental protection measures. His formative years coincided with growing awareness of environmental issues globally, including the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, which had significant impact on the Baltic region and likely influenced his later commitment to environmental protection. The restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, when Vējonis was 25 years old, created opportunities for young professionals to contribute to building new democratic institutions and policies aligned with Western European standards. His biological education at the University of Latvia provided him with scientific credibility during an era when Latvia needed expertise to address environmental challenges inherited from the Soviet period and to meet European Union accession requirements.
