Biography

Rami Hamdallah (Arabic: رامي الحمد الله, romanized: Rāmī al-Ḥamd Allāh; born 10 August 1958) is a Palestinian politician and academic who was Prime Minister of Palestine from 2013 to 2019. Born in Anabta, a town in the northern West Bank, Hamdallah studied at the University of Jordan, University of Manchester, and University of Lancaster, specializing in linguistics and language studies.

Hamdallah's academic career thrived when he became president of An-Najah National University in Nablus in 1998. He held this position for fifteen years until 2013. During his time at the university, he became a respected educator and administrator, leading the institution through a challenging period in Palestinian history. His background in linguistics shaped his approach to education and later influenced his political communication strategies.

On 2 June 2013, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Hamdallah as Prime Minister to succeed Salam Fayyad. However, his initial tenure was short and difficult. Just weeks after his appointment, Hamdallah resigned on 20 June 2013, and Abbas accepted it on 23 June. The resignation was due to disagreements over government formation and the absence of consultation with Hamas regarding his appointment. Six weeks later, Abbas asked Hamdallah to return and form a new government, which he did successfully on 19 September 2013.

Hamdallah's most notable political role came in 2014 when he was made head of the Palestinian unity government on 2 June, following reconciliation talks between Fatah and Hamas. This government aimed to bridge the political divide between the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Despite difficulties and ongoing tensions between the factions, Hamdallah stayed in his position until resigning on 29 January 2019. His political affiliation was somewhat unclear. Though he was a member of Fatah, the BBC described him as a political independent. For his diplomatic efforts, he was awarded the Grand Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy in 2018.

Before Fame

Growing up in Anabta during the 1960s and 1970s, Hamdallah lived through the growth of modern Palestinian political awareness after the 1967 Six-Day War and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. He pursued higher education at the University of Jordan and went on to study at British institutions like Manchester and Lancaster. There, he gained expertise in linguistics during a time of growth in language studies in the 1980s.

His rise to prominence started when he returned to Palestinian academia. Educators and intellectuals were key in keeping Palestinian institutional identity alive under occupation. In 1998, he became president of An-Najah National University, putting him at the crossroads of education and politics. Palestinian universities often became hubs of political activity and intellectual resistance during the Second Intifada.
