Biography

Juan Manuel Santos Calderón was born on August 10, 1951, in Bogotá, Colombia, into the well-known Santos family, which owned El Tiempo, a major Colombian newspaper, from 1913 to 2007. He studied internationally at the University of Kansas, London School of Economics and Political Science, and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, earning degrees in economics and public administration. This education set the stage for his career in journalism, business, and politics.

Santos started his political career in 1991 when President César Gaviria appointed him as Colombia's first Minister of Foreign Trade. He later became the Minister of Finance and Public Credit under President Andrés Pastrana starting in 2000. His political career gained momentum during Álvaro Uribe's presidency. He co-founded the Social Party of National Unity in 2005 and became Minister of National Defence in 2006. In this role, he pursued aggressive military tactics against FARC and other guerrilla groups, though his tenure was affected by the "False positives" scandal involving civilian deaths.

Santos won the 2010 presidential election as Uribe's chosen successor but quickly parted ways with Uribe over policy differences, especially regarding peace talks with FARC rebels. This led to a strong rivalry with Uribe, who started the Democratic Center party in 2013 to oppose Santos. Facing political hurdles, Santos narrowly won reelection in 2014 against Uribe's candidate, Óscar Iván Zuluaga.

The key achievement of Santos' presidency was securing a comprehensive peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), ending more than fifty years of conflict. Despite the public initially rejecting the peace deal in a 2016 referendum, Santos worked to revise and implement the agreement. His efforts earned him the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his crucial role in ending Colombia's prolonged civil conflict. Santos finished his term in 2018, with the peace process as his main legacy.

Before Fame

Santos grew up in one of Colombia's most influential families, with access to top-tier education and media connections through his family's ownership of El Tiempo newspaper. His early years coincided with Colombia's growing internal conflict and drug violence, shaping his view of the country's security issues. After completing his education abroad as a Fulbright Scholar, he worked in journalism and business before moving into public service.

His rise in politics began during Colombia's economic liberalization in the 1990s, when his skills in economics and international trade made him valuable to reformist governments. Santos built his early reputation as a skilled bureaucrat who could handle complicated policy issues, forming relationships across Colombia's political scene that would later help his presidential goals.
