Biography
Anwar bin Ibrahim was born on August 10, 1947, in Cherok Tok Kun, Penang, during the Malayan Union period. He went to Stowell National School and then attended the well-known Malay College Kuala Kangsar before graduating from Universiti Malaya. Before starting his formal political career, Anwar was a well-known student leader and Islamic activist. He was president of the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, making him an influential voice among Malaysia's Muslim youth and intellectuals.
Anwar began his political career by joining the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the leading party in Malaysia's long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. He quickly rose through the party ranks, becoming Malaysia's 7th Deputy Prime Minister in 1993. Starting in 1991, he was also the Minister of Finance and played a key role in managing Malaysia's economy during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. His forward-thinking economic ideas and growing international presence made him a notable figure both in Malaysia and abroad.
In 1998, Anwar's political career took a significant turn when Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad removed him from all government positions. This led Anwar to lead the Reformasi (Reform) movement, advocating for political and social changes in Malaysia. In April 1999, he was imprisoned on charges of corruption and sodomy, which many saw as politically charged. His conviction was overturned in 2004, and he was released after five years.
Upon returning to politics, Anwar served as the 12th Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2015, successfully bringing together various opposition parties into the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. This group participated in the 2008 and 2013 general elections. Anwar disputed the 2013 election results and led protests. In 2014, his attempt to become Menteri Besar of Selangor through the Kajang Move led to a political crisis and another five-year prison sentence after a second sodomy conviction in 2015.
While in prison, Anwar teamed up with his former mentor turned rival Mahathir Mohamad in the new Pakatan Harapan coalition. This group won a historic victory in the 2018 general election. After a royal pardon by King Muhammad V, Anwar was released in May 2018. After years of political maneuvering and coalition shifts, he finally reached his long-awaited goal of becoming Prime Minister in November 2022, making him Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister. Upon entering office, he also took on the role of Minister of Finance, leveraging his past experience in economic management.
Before Fame
Anwar Ibrahim's rise in politics took root during his university days when he was an Islamic activist and student leader. Growing up in post-colonial Malaysia, a time of nation-building and shaping cultural identity, he got heavily involved in Islamic intellectual movements and student politics. Leading the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, he became a vocal advocate for progressive Islamic values and social reform.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Malaysia was rapidly developing under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, creating opportunities for young, educated leaders to enter politics. Anwar's blend of Islamic background, intellectual talent, and charismatic leadership made him a good fit for UMNO, which was modernizing while keeping its Malay-Muslim roots. His move from activism to being a politician was part of a larger trend of Islamic intellectual movements joining Malaysia's governing coalition at that time.
