Biography

Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi was born on November 27, 1962, in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. She studied at Universitas Gadjah Mada, a top institution in Indonesia, and later attended The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Her education in both places gave her valuable international experience and a strong foundation in international relations.

Marsudi began her diplomatic career at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, steadily moving up over the years. She became well-known for her expertise in European affairs, serving as Ambassador to Iceland and Norway from 2005 to 2008, where she developed a thorough understanding of Nordic political and diplomatic systems. Later, she was Indonesia's Ambassador to the Netherlands from 2012 to 2014, a role in which she highlighted her skills in managing relations with European countries.

In October 2014, President Joko Widodo appointed Marsudi as Minister for Foreign Affairs, making her the first woman in Indonesia to hold this key position. During her term from 2014 to 2024, she led Indonesia's foreign policy through major global challenges, such as tensions in the South China Sea, the COVID-19 pandemic, and changing political alliances in Southeast Asia. She focused on multilateralism and maintained Indonesia's non-aligned foreign policy, while also pushing for economic diplomacy.

Throughout her career, Marsudi has been recognized internationally for her diplomatic work. She received the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, showcasing her strong connections with Nordic countries, and the Knights Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau from the Netherlands in 2015. She was awarded the Order of the State of Palestine in 2024 and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru in 2018, showing her global diplomatic reach. In Indonesia, she received the Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana in 2020 and Bintang Mahaputera Adipurna in 2025, the country's highest civilian honors.

Before Fame

Growing up in Semarang during Suharto's era, Marsudi saw Indonesia's rapid economic growth and its increasing integration into the global community. Her decision to study international relations in the Netherlands showed the opportunities available to talented Indonesian students as the country opened up to the world. The 1980s and 1990s were important years for Indonesia's foreign service, as the nation worked to balance its non-aligned foreign policy with growing economic ties to Western countries and regional partnerships within ASEAN.

She joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during Indonesia's shift to democracy after Suharto resigned in 1998. This period of political reform, known as Reformasi, brought new chances for diplomatic innovation and more representation of women in government roles. Marsudi's early career benefited from these democratic changes, which focused on merit-based appointments and increased diversity in Indonesia's foreign service.
