Biography
Robert Fico was born on September 15, 1964, in Topoľčany, Czechoslovakia. He studied law at Comenius University in Bratislava and later at UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London. He started his political career in the early 1990s, being elected to parliament in 1992, and the following year joined the Czechoslovak delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He is married to Svetlana Ficová and is regarded as a key political figure in Slovakia's history.
Fico founded the left-wing party Direction – Social Democracy in 1999 after leaving the Party of the Democratic Left. His party quickly rose to prominence, winning the 2006 parliamentary election with 29.1% of the vote, which allowed Fico to form his first government. That administration lasted until 2010, when, despite winning 34.8% of the votes and securing 62 seats, his party did not form the government, so Fico moved to opposition. He returned to power in 2012 after his party won 44.41% of the vote and 83 seats, forming the first single-party majority government in Slovakia since the end of communism in 1989.
His second term as prime minister ended in 2018 due to a political crisis following the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée. Mass protests occurred across Slovakia, leading to Fico's resignation in March 2018, passing power to his deputy Peter Pellegrini. In 2013, Fico ran for president in the 2014 election but lost in the second round to Andrej Kiska. After resigning, he remained a significant figure in his party and in parliament.
Fico returned as prime minister after the 2023 parliamentary election, where Direction – Social Democracy led the vote. His return was controversial, mainly due to his stance on the war in Ukraine and his opposition to Slovak military support for Kyiv. In May 2024, Fico was targeted in a serious assassination attempt in Handlová, where he was shot multiple times. He survived after emergency surgery and spent weeks recovering before slowly returning to public and political life. The attack shocked Slovakia and drew global attention.
Throughout his career, Fico's political views have been seen as populist, mixing left-wing economic policies with socially conservative views. He was awarded the Order of the White Lion, the Czech Republic's highest state honor, in 2014. His political career, spanning more than 30 years, has made him a significant figure in Central European politics post-communism.
Before Fame
Robert Fico grew up in communist Czechoslovakia during a time of change. He studied law at Comenius University in Bratislava, which set the stage for his career in both law and politics. He also attended the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London, where he experienced Western politics and academics right after 1989.
His political career began in the challenging times following the end of communism in Slovakia. He was elected to parliament in 1992, just as Czechoslovakia was splitting into two separate countries. Initially, he was part of the Party of the Democratic Left and honed his political skills while Slovak political identity was still forming. In 1999, he decided to leave and start Direction – Social Democracy, a key move that set him on the path to becoming a major figure in the country.
