Biography

Ryang Yong-gi (Korean: 량용기; Hanja: 梁勇基; born January 7, 1982, in Osaka, Japan) is a former professional footballer who played for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) at the international level. Born in Japan, Ryang chose to play for North Korea, a decision shared by several ethnic Korean players raised in Japan who decide to represent either the North or South Korean national teams. He mainly played as a creative midfielder and was club captain at different points in his career. He attended Hannan University in Japan, where he developed his football skills before turning professional.

Ryang made an impact internationally during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, earning at least one cap. He was later selected for the North Korean squad for the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup, a pivotal event in his career. There, Ryang delivered standout performances that gained him top individual awards in the tournament.

At the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup, Ryang won both the Golden Boot for top scorer and the Most Valuable Player award, becoming one of the competition's key players. His performances were crucial in leading Korea DPR to the tournament victory, which also secured a spot in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. These achievements made Ryang one of the most celebrated players from North Korea's football system at that time.

During his club career, Ryang played in the DPR Korea League, North Korea's top domestic league, representing several clubs throughout his career. As club captain, he was a leader on and off the field, with his experience of being raised and educated in Japan giving him a unique perspective compared to players trained domestically in North Korea. His creative play in midfield and ability to score goals distinguished him in the league.

Before Fame

Ryang Yong-gi was born on January 7, 1982, in Osaka, Japan, to the Zainichi Korean community. This group consists of ethnic Koreans living in Japan for generations, many of whom are descendants of those who moved during Japan's colonial rule over Korea. This community has produced several footballers who have represented Korean national teams. Ryang completed his education and developed his early football skills in Japan, attending Hannan University in Osaka Prefecture, which is known for turning out competitive football players.

While at Hannan University during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ryang received structured football training at a time when Japanese football was growing significantly after the J.League was founded in 1993 and Japan co-hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In this setting, Ryang developed the technical and creative skills that later defined him as a midfielder. His choice to play internationally for North Korea instead of fully sticking with the Japanese football system set him on a unique path, eventually leading to notable success on the continental stage.
