Biography

Sergei Yevgenyevich Aleinikov was born on 7 November 1961 in Minsk, in what was then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. A professional footballer who operated primarily as a defensive midfielder, Aleinikov built a distinguished career spanning club football across the Soviet Union, Italy, and beyond, as well as extensive international service with the Soviet Union national team. He was recognized for his stamina, intelligent reading of the game, solid technical ability, and precise passing, qualities that made him one of the more refined midfielders produced by Soviet football during its later decades. He was also capable of deputizing in defensive roles, including as a sweeper or centre-back, which reflected the versatility coaches valued in him throughout his career.
