Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was born on October 6, 1966, in Chatkhil Upazila, Bangladesh. She went abroad for her higher education, attending Holy Cross College and then the University of Essex, where she built a solid background in law and political science. This education influenced her approach to governance and parliamentary procedures when she returned to Bangladesh to start her public service career.
Chaudhury made her way up in the Awami League, the political party led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Before becoming Speaker, she was the State Minister of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, where she focused on gender policy in Bangladesh. In this role, she gained direct experience with legislative and administrative processes at the national level.
In April 2013, Chaudhury was elected Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh's national parliament. She was the first woman in the country's history to hold this position. At 46, she was also the youngest person to be appointed. Her election was seen as a major step for women's political representation in South Asia, especially in a country where women had often been underrepresented in high government roles, despite having female heads of state.
