Biography

Sisowath Sirik Matak (22 January 1914 – 21 April 1975) was a Cambodian prince and politician from the House of Sisowath, part of the Cambodian royal family. Born in Phnom Penh, he became a key political figure in twentieth-century Cambodia, significantly influencing the country's government during a time of intense regional conflict and internal political turmoil. His career led to the creation of the Khmer Republic but ended tragically when he was executed by the Khmer Rouge.

Before Fame

Born into the Sisowath branch of the Cambodian royal family in Phnom Penh in 1914, Sirik Matak grew up within the royal court during the French colonial rule over Cambodia. His royal background placed him in the upper levels of Cambodian society, and he was educated in an environment where aristocracy and political influence were closely linked. As Cambodia went through decolonization and gained independence from France in 1953, royal family members often held important administrative and diplomatic positions. Sirik Matak maneuvered through this transitional period, gaining political experience and building relationships that later made him a key player in the political disputes that shaped Cambodia in the 1960s and early 1970s.
