Biography
Kameradin Susanthika Jayasinghe was born on December 17, 1975, in Sri Lanka. A specialist in the 100 and 200 meters, she became one of Asia's top sprint athletes. Her career, stretching over a decade, brought significant recognition to Sri Lankan sports on the global stage.
Jayasinghe competed for Sri Lanka in the Olympics three times: at the 1996 Atlanta Games, the 2000 Sydney Games, and the 2008 Beijing Games. Her biggest achievement came at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, where she won a silver medal in the 200 meters. This made her the second Sri Lankan athlete to win an Olympic medal, following Duncan White. She was the first Asian woman to win an Olympic or World Championship medal in a sprint event, and she's the only Asian athlete to win an Olympic sprint medal. Her silver was the sole Olympic medal in athletics won by a South Asian athlete for 21 years, until Neeraj Chopra won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Outside the Olympics, Jayasinghe shone at the World Athletics Championships, becoming the only Sri Lankan to win a medal there. These successes earned her the nickname the Asian Black Mare among fans. In 2017, she received the Deshabandu honor, a national award in Sri Lanka, and other recognitions like the Newsfirst Platinum Awards.
Despite her achievements, Jayasinghe's career was marked by personal and political challenges. She faced controversies, including false doping accusations and conflicts with sports officials and politicians who tried to take credit for her success without providing support. She was also involved in a prolonged murder trial with her former spouse and had long absences from competition due to injury and personal troubles. These factors meant her career didn't fully showcase her potential.
Jayasinghe is seen as one of Sri Lanka's top sprinters, and her impact on the country's athletics is unrivaled among female athletes. She has retired from competitive sprinting but leaves a record of firsts that remains unmatched in South Asian and Asian sprinting.
Before Fame
Susanthika Jayasinghe grew up in Sri Lanka when the country's sports facilities were basic, and resources for top-level training were limited. Female athletes in South Asia faced major structural and cultural challenges in competitive sports, making it especially hard to compete internationally. Despite these conditions, Jayasinghe showed exceptional speed from a young age and pursued sprinting with determination.
Her talent gained national attention and eventually led her to compete internationally for Sri Lanka in sprint events at regional and global competitions. Being selected for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics marked her emergence as a serious international competitor. The years following saw her become the best sprinter Sri Lanka had ever produced. Her journey was shaped by personal resilience as much as by her talent, considering the political and institutional hurdles she faced along the way.
