Biography

Tarō Asō, a Japanese politician born on September 20, 1940, in Iizuka, was Prime Minister from 2008 to 2009 and served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance from 2012 to 2021. He holds the record for the longest tenure in these dual roles in Japan. A member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Asō has been active in Japanese politics for over 40 years, starting with his election to the House of Representatives in 1979. Throughout his career, he has held several important ministerial positions, including Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2007 and Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications from 2003 to 2005.

Asō studied internationally at Gakushuin University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Stanford University, and the University of London. This education gave him a broad perspective that shaped his diplomatic and economic policies. Before politics, he had a successful business career, setting him apart from many lifelong politicians and building his reputation as someone who understands both business and government. He is married to Chikako Asō and has received many international honors, such as the Grand Cross, Special Class of the Order of the Sun of Peru and the Order of Friendship.

As Prime Minister, Asō led during a tough time for Japan, taking office in September 2008 after becoming the LDP President. But his time in office faced significant challenges, leading the LDP to a historic loss in the 2009 elections, only the second time a governing party in Japan lost re-election post-war. After this, he resigned as party President but stayed influential within the LDP. His political career rebounded when the LDP regained power in 2012 under Shinzo Abe, and Asō was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, roles he kept even after Yoshihide Suga took over from Abe in 2020.

Currently, Asō is vice president of the LDP under Fumio Kishida and a senior advisor under Shigeru Ishiba. He leads the Shikōkai faction in the party and is a key figure in Japanese politics. Over his career, he has faced various controversies, such as acknowledging in 2008 that his family benefited from forced labor during World War II, yet he has refused to apologize for this connection. Asō is also known for his political missteps and controversial comments, which have sometimes caused diplomatic and political issues but haven't greatly reduced his influence in the LDP or Japanese politics.

Before Fame

Born into a politically connected family in Iizuka in 1940, Asō got a privileged education, starting at Gakushuin Primary School and moving through the elite Gakushuin school system. His time at prestigious places like the London School of Economics and Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s gave him a broad view of global economic and political ideas.

Before diving into politics, Asō made a name for himself in business, gaining real-world experience in private enterprise. This set him apart from typical career politicians. His family's business background, combined with his own entrepreneurial ventures, gave him a solid understanding of Japan's economic growth during the post-war boom. This mix of market knowledge and public policy readiness helped him when he first ran for the House of Representatives in 1979.
