Biography
Tharman Shanmugaratnam was born on 25 February 1957 in Singapore. He went to Anglo-Chinese School before studying abroad at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. His studies in economics laid the foundation for a successful career in public policy and government.
Tharman started his political career in the 2001 general election, winning a seat in Parliament with the People's Action Party, representing Jurong Group Representation Constituency. He was re-elected in 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2020. Throughout his time in Parliament, he held several important positions, including Minister for Education from 2003 to 2008, Minister for Manpower in 2011 and 2012, and Minister for Finance from 2007 to 2015. He also served as Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies between 2011 and 2015.
From 2011 to 2019, Tharman was Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, one of the highest positions in the government. At the same time, he chaired the Monetary Authority of Singapore from 2011 to 2023, managing the country's central banking and financial regulations. His expertise in economics earned him international acclaim, including his role as Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the main advisory body to the International Monetary Fund's Board of Governors. He was acknowledged as Asia's Most Influential in Singapore in 2021.
In 2019, Tharman moved to the role of Senior Minister, a position he held until 2023. In June of that year, he announced he would run for the Presidential Election. Since the presidency is non-partisan, he left the People's Action Party and Parliament on 7 June 2023. On 2 September 2023, he won the presidential election with 70.4 percent of the vote, becoming Singapore's ninth President. His victory was especially significant because he became the first presidential candidate of non-Chinese descent to win a contested presidential election in Singapore.
Before Fame
Tharman Shanmugaratnam grew up in Singapore during a time of rapid growth after the country gained independence in 1965. He attended Anglo-Chinese School, a well-known school in Singapore, and then continued his studies in the UK and the US. He studied at the London School of Economics, Wolfson College at Cambridge, and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, which gave him a strong background in economics and public policy.
He started his public life through the civil service and policy circles before officially entering politics in 2001. In the late 20th century, Singapore was going through major economic changes, and Tharman's knowledge of fiscal and monetary policy made him a respected voice in the government. His quick appointment to ministerial roles after joining Parliament showed the trust the ruling party had in his skills and judgment.
