Biography

Vladimir Mikhaylovich Smirnov was born on March 7, 1964, in Shchuchinsk, a small city in northern Kazakhstan, which was then part of the Soviet Union. Coming from a Russian background, he grew up in a region where winter sports were very common, honing his skills as a cross-country skier during the intense era of Soviet athletics. He was part of the USSR national team from 1982 until the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, after which he represented the newly independent Republic of Kazakhstan in international competitions.

Smirnov grew up in Shchuchinsk, a town near the Burabay lakes in Kazakhstan, known for its natural beauty that made outdoor and winter sports easy to enjoy.
