Biography

Wesley Sneijder was born on 9 June 1984 in Utrecht, Netherlands, and went on to become one of the most decorated and celebrated midfielders of his generation. Known for his exceptional playmaking ability, precise passing, and powerful long-range shooting, he was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world during the peak years of his career in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Sneijder came through the Ajax Youth Academy and made his professional debut with the Amsterdam club, where he developed into a key figure in the first team. During his time at Ajax, he won four trophies and was awarded the Johan Cruyff Trophy in 2004. He was also honored as Ajax Player of the Year in 2007, a recognition of his growing influence on the club. That same year, Real Madrid purchased him for €27 million, and in his first season in Spain he helped the club win La Liga, demonstrating immediately that he could perform at the highest level of European football.

In 2009, Sneijder moved to Inter Milan for €15 million, and it was at the Italian club that he reached the pinnacle of his club career. Under manager José Mourinho, Inter won the treble in the 2009–10 season, claiming Serie A, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup, as well as two Coppa Italia titles during Sneijder's time there. His performances throughout that campaign were outstanding, and in 2010 he was named UEFA Midfielder of the Season and was identified by FIFA as one of the three best midfielders in the world. He came agonizingly close to winning the Ballon d'Or that year, finishing fourth in the voting.

Sneijder was sold to Turkish club Galatasaray for €7.5 million in 2013, and once again he made an immediate impression, helping the club win the Süper Lig in his first season. He also contributed to the club's Turkish Super Cup victory, secured with a 1–0 win against fierce rivals Fenerbahçe. After his time in Turkey, he had shorter stints with French club Nice and Qatari side Al Gharafa before announcing his retirement from professional football in 2019.

For the Dutch national team, Sneijder made his senior debut in April 2003 at the age of 18 and went on to represent the Netherlands at three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) and three UEFA European Championships (2004, 2008, and 2012). His finest hour on the international stage came at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he was instrumental in the Netherlands reaching the final. He won the Bronze Boot and the Silver Ball at the tournament and was named to the team of the tournament. He earned 134 international caps in total, making him the most capped Dutch player in history. He announced his international retirement in March 2018.

Before Fame

Wesley Sneijder grew up in Utrecht in the Netherlands and showed exceptional footballing talent from an early age. He joined the renowned Ajax Youth Academy, one of Europe's most respected development systems, which had previously produced world-class players such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, and Clarence Seedorf. The structured and technically demanding environment of the Ajax academy shaped Sneijder into the precise and intelligent midfielder he would become as a professional.

By the early 2000s, Dutch football was in a period of transition, seeking a new generation of players to carry on the country's tradition of attacking, technically refined football. Sneijder emerged at exactly the right moment, breaking into the Ajax first team as a teenager and quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in European football. His ability to read the game, deliver accurate passes under pressure, and contribute goals from distance set him apart from his peers.
