Biography

Wojciech Tomasz Szczęsny was born on April 18, 1990, in Warsaw, Poland. He's a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper and has one of the most successful careers of any Polish player today, playing for top clubs in England, Italy, and Spain over almost two decades. He's married to Polish singer Marina Łuczenko, and they are one of the well-known sports-entertainment couples in Poland.

Szczęsny started his club career at Legia Warsaw before joining Arsenal in the English Premier League in January 2006. He made his professional debut for Arsenal in 2009 after a loan to Brentford that helped improve his skills. He became Arsenal's main goalkeeper, winning two FA Cups and sharing the 2013–14 Premier League Golden Glove with Czech goalkeeper Petr Čech. Despite his achievements, he left Arsenal and moved to Italy, first on two loan spells at Roma starting in 2015, where he gained more recognition.

In 2017, Szczęsny signed with Juventus, the Serie A champions at the time. He spent his first season mostly backing up legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, during which the club clinched a domestic double. When Buffon left, Szczęsny became the starting goalkeeper, winning multiple Serie A titles and earning a Yashin Trophy nomination in 2019, awarded to the world's best goalkeeper. He also won the Serie A Best Goalkeeper Award in the 2019–20 season, establishing himself among Europe's top goalkeepers. His seven years at Juventus brought him many individual and team honors.

In 2024, Szczęsny announced his retirement from professional football but quickly returned to the game, signing with Barcelona in Spain's La Liga to cover an injury crisis. During his debut season with Barcelona, he won a domestic treble, adding another achievement to his impressive career.

Internationally, Szczęsny earned 84 caps for Poland from 2009 to 2024, making him one of the national team's most experienced players. He was part of the squad when Poland co-hosted UEFA Euro 2012 and continued to compete in the European Championships in 2016, 2020, and 2024, as well as the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. His long career and steady presence made him a key figure in Polish goalkeeping for many years.

Before Fame

Wojciech Szczęsny grew up in Warsaw, Poland, in a family passionate about football. His father, Maciej Szczęsny, was a professional goalkeeper who played for various Polish clubs. This provided Wojciech with early exposure to the game's demands and shaped his career direction. Having a parent familiar with the professional goalkeeping world gave Wojciech a head start in learning the necessary skills and mindset.

He joined the youth academy at Legia Warsaw, one of Poland's top clubs, before moving to Arsenal's academy as a teenager in January 2006. His shift to English football came when Arsenal, led by manager Arsène Wenger, was known for developing young talent from Europe. Szczęsny progressed through Arsenal's youth system in the late 2000s, a period when the club was fostering several players who would go on to successful careers. He made his professional debut for Arsenal's first team in 2009 and eventually became the team's first-choice goalkeeper.
