Biography

Xabier Alonso Olano, known as Xabi Alonso, was born on November 25, 1981, in Tolosa, in Spain's Basque Country. Considered one of the best midfielders of his time, he was known for his excellent passing, smart positioning, and long-range shooting. He started his career at Real Sociedad, the club in his home province of Gipuzkoa, where he became captain and helped the team finish second in La Liga in the 2002–03 season. A short loan to Eibar early in his career gave him important first-team experience before he made it to the top level.

In 2004, Alonso moved to Liverpool for £10.5 million, quickly becoming one of Europe's top central midfielders. In his first season at Anfield, he played a key role in Liverpool's incredible 2005 UEFA Champions League win, scoring a crucial equalizer in the final against AC Milan before the club pulled off one of the competition's most dramatic comebacks. He went on to win the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, and the FA Community Shield with Liverpool before leaving in 2009.

Real Madrid signed him for £30 million in 2009, and during his five seasons there, Alonso won La Liga, two Copa del Rey titles, and another UEFA Champions League. In 2014, he joined Bayern Munich, securing three consecutive Bundesliga titles and a domestic double in his second season. He retired from club football in 2017. Internationally, Alonso debuted for Spain in April 2003 and was part of the Spanish teams that won the European Championship in 2008, the FIFA World Cup in 2010, and the European Championship again in 2012. He also played for Spain in Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup before retiring from international football after the 2014 World Cup. With 114 caps, he ranks eighth in Spain's all-time appearances.

After retiring as a player, Alonso went into coaching, starting with Real Madrid's youth academy, managing their U14 team. He became the manager of Real Sociedad B in 2019 and achieved promotion to the Segunda División in his second season. In 2022, he became head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga, where he led the club to an unbeaten domestic double, quickly establishing himself as a leading young coach in world football. His role as Chelsea's manager, set to start on July 1, 2026, marks his next big step in his coaching career.

Before Fame

Xabi Alonso grew up in the Basque Country of northern Spain, a region known for its strong football culture and sense of regional identity. His father, Periko Alonso, was a professional footballer who won La Liga with Real Sociedad and played for Spain, giving Xabi a close connection to professional football from an early age. In this environment, Alonso developed his game in the Real Sociedad academy, learning the technical and tactical traditions of Basque football.

His rise in the sport was steady. A loan to Eibar in the lower divisions gave him valuable first-team experience before he returned to Real Sociedad and secured his place in the main squad. His calmness on the ball, ability to control the game's pace, and vision in tight situations quickly stood out. By the 2002–03 season, he was captaining Real Sociedad as they made a serious run for the La Liga title, finishing second. This performance caught the eye of Europe's top clubs and paved the way for his move to Liverpool the next year.
