Biography

Zarifa Ghafari is an Afghan women's rights activist and former politician recognized worldwide for her pioneering role as mayor of Maidan Shahr. She was born in Kabul in 1994 and attended the University of the Punjab, gaining the knowledge and skills that shaped her advocacy work and political career.

In 2019, at 24, Ghafari was appointed mayor of Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak Province in Afghanistan. This made her one of the few female mayors in Afghan history, following Azra Jafari and alongside Khadija Zahra Ahmadi. Her age and gender made her role especially significant in a country where women faced many challenges to participating in governance. As mayor, she worked on improving local infrastructure, promoting women's rights, and advancing social development in her community.

Ghafari's activism and political efforts took place during a very difficult time in Afghanistan, marked by ongoing conflict and political instability. Her advocacy for women's rights and her prominent role in local government made her a target for those opposed to women in public life. She survived three assassination attempts, highlighting the personal risks she took while pursuing her work in public service and activism.

Her contributions to women's rights and governance gained significant international recognition. In 2019, she was named to the BBC 100 Women list, which honors influential and inspiring women worldwide. The next year, she received the International Women of Courage Award from the US Secretary of State, acknowledging her bravery and dedication to advancing women's rights, despite facing serious personal threats. These awards brought global attention to her work and the broader challenges women face in Afghanistan.

Before Fame

Growing up in Kabul during a time of major political change in Afghanistan, Ghafari experienced the challenges women in her country faced. Her decision to pursue higher education at the University of the Punjab showed her dedication to personal growth and learning, despite the barriers many Afghan women encountered in accessing quality education.

The early 2000s and 2010s in Afghanistan offered more opportunities for women's involvement in public life after the fall of the Taliban government in 2001. This time of relative openness allowed women like Ghafari to seek education and careers in public service, although such involvement was still controversial and risky in many parts of the country.
