Biography
Zuzana Čaputová (born Strapáková on June 21, 1973, in Bratislava, Slovakia) studied law at Comenius University in Bratislava, which began her journey as a lawyer, civic activist, and eventually a national political leader. Before stepping into electoral politics, she spent years working at a grassroots level, focusing on environmental protection and civil society issues in Pezinok, a small town near Bratislava.
Čaputová became well known for her decade-long legal fight against building a toxic waste landfill in Pezinok. Working with the environmental group Via Iuris, she took the case through Slovak courts and finally succeeded in having the landfill closed. This effort earned her the 2016 Goldman Environmental Prize, a notable award in international environmental activism for grassroots defenders.
Her strong reputation as a dedicated advocate helped her gain political support. She joined the liberal Progressive Slovakia party and announced her run for the Slovak presidency in 2018. Campaigning on anti-corruption, rule of law, and civic decency, she won the first round of the 2019 Slovak presidential election and captured victory in the run-off with about 58 percent of the vote. This made her the first woman to become President of Slovakia and the youngest president in Slovakia's history, assuming office at 45.
From 2019 to 2024, as president, Čaputová faced a challenging time in Slovak and European politics. She consistently supported democratic values, European integration, and Slovakia's independent judiciary and media. She also dealt with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and was outspoken in her support for Ukraine following Russia's large-scale invasion in 2022. Her presidency often involved tensions with successive governments, mirroring the increasing polarization in Slovak society during this time.
Čaputová decided not to run again in the 2024 Slovak presidential election, pointing to the personal and political demands of the role amidst a sharply divided national atmosphere. She was married to Ivan Čaputa. Throughout her public career, she received many national and international awards, including the Goldman Environmental Prize, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer from Greece, the Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Netherlands Lion, the Freedom Prize, and several Slovak state honors.
Before Fame
Zuzana Čaputová grew up in Bratislava during the last years of communist Czechoslovakia and matured just as the country transitioned to democracy after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. She studied law at Comenius University in Bratislava, graduating during a key time when Slovak civil society was still establishing its institutions and legal framework following years of authoritarian rule.
Instead of pursuing a typical legal career after her education, Čaputová got involved in civic and environmental advocacy. She worked with non-governmental organizations focused on public interest law and environmental protection. Her move to Pezinok put her in direct conflict with a proposed toxic landfill project, and her long legal fight against it for over a decade shaped her public persona before she entered politics.
