Strategic Narrative Overview
Weeks of heavy urban combat gradually eroded ANSF defensive lines around Kandahar. By early August, the city's defenses had begun to dissolve under sustained Taliban pressure. On 12 August 2021, Taliban fighters entered and overran most of the city, seizing the Sarposa prison and freeing more than 1,000 inmates. Resistance continued at the city's airport, where government-aligned forces held out against Taliban encirclement for several more days.
01 / The Origins
Following the announcement of U.S. and NATO troop withdrawals from Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban launched a sweeping offensive to recapture major Afghan cities. Kandahar, Afghanistan's second-largest city and the Taliban's historical stronghold, became a primary target. Beginning on 9 July 2021, Taliban insurgents initiated a sustained assault on the city, which was defended by Afghan National Security Forces increasingly weakened by collapsing morale and dwindling support.
03 / The Outcome
Government loyalists at Kandahar Airport were evacuated on 16 August 2021, marking the complete fall of the city to Taliban control. The loss of Kandahar, coming alongside the collapse of Kabul on 15 August, effectively ended the Afghan government's ability to resist. The Taliban reasserted control over a city symbolically central to their movement, consolidating their nationwide takeover of Afghanistan.
