The 1992 Formula One season was in its closing stages, with the fifteenth of sixteen rounds held at Suzuka Circuit. Williams-Renault had been dominant throughout the season, and Riccardo Patrese continued to represent the team alongside champion Nigel Mansell as competition concluded in Japan.
On 25 October 1992, Riccardo Patrese drove his Williams-Renault to victory in the 53-lap Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, formally known as the XVIII Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix. Gerhard Berger finished second in a McLaren-Honda, and Martin Brundle took third in a Benetton-Ford.
Patrese's win proved to be the sixth and last Formula One victory of his career. It also marked the final Grand Prix win by an Italian driver for over a decade, a gap that would not be closed until Giancarlo Fisichella won the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix.
