The 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the first time the Baku City Circuit hosted a race counting toward the Formula One World Championship. Sebastian Vettel entered the weekend leading the Drivers' Championship by twelve points over Lewis Hamilton, while Mercedes held an eight-point advantage over Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.
Held on 25 June 2017, the race was disrupted by a red flag and multiple incidents. Lewis Hamilton started from pole but did not win. Daniel Ricciardo, who had crashed in qualifying, recovered to take victory ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Lance Stroll of Williams completed the podium, becoming the second youngest driver ever to finish on the Formula One podium.
Ricciardo's victory was his fifth career Formula One win. Lance Stroll became the first Canadian on the podium since Jacques Villeneuve at the 2001 German Grand Prix, and it remained Williams's last podium finish until the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. The race also marked the last appearance of a red flag in Formula One until the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.
