ISIL, with alleged logistical links to Wahhabi-related networks, dispatched five Kurdish-Iranian militants who had returned to Iran in August 2016. Iranian officials accused Saudi Arabia of directing the operation, with IRGC commander Jafari citing intelligence that Riyadh had demanded attacks inside Iran.
On 7 June 2017, five ISIL-affiliated terrorists simultaneously attacked the Iranian Parliament building and the Mausoleum of Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran, killing 17 civilians and wounding 43. Iranian security forces killed the operational commander and mastermind by 10 June, and a third planned attack was foiled on the same day.
Iran responded with medium-range missile strikes against ISIL positions in Dayr al-Zawr, Syria, on 18 June 2017, marking a rare direct Iranian ballistic missile offensive abroad. The attacks intensified Iran's accusations against Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the United States, deepening regional tensions and prompting increased domestic security measures.
