Heavy rain at Hockenheimring created treacherous conditions throughout the race. Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton led until lap 29, when he crashed behind the safety car and also received a time penalty for incorrectly entering the pit lane, surrendering the lead and his front wing.
Max Verstappen, starting second, capitalised on Hamilton's misfortune to win the 2019 German Grand Prix on 28 July. Daniil Kvyat and Lance Stroll gambled on switching to dry tyres under the final safety car period before their rivals, vaulting them to an unexpected third and fourth. Robert Kubica finished tenth to score a point for Williams.
Verstappen's victory continued his strong mid-season form, while Hamilton's crash cost him crucial championship points. The race proved historically significant: it was the last German Grand Prix held in Formula One as of 2026, the last F1 race at Hockenheimring, and the last occasion a Russian driver stood on an F1 podium.
