Max Verstappen took his first career pole position and led the majority of the 70-lap race at the Hungaroring. Mercedes opted for a two-stop strategy for Lewis Hamilton, gambling that extra tyre performance in the final stint would allow him to challenge for victory.
The 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix was held on 4 August 2019 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród. Hamilton's two-stop strategy proved decisive, enabling him to overtake Verstappen with four laps remaining. Sebastian Vettel finished third for Ferrari, with teammate Charles Leclerc fourth. The dominant pace of the top four left all other classified finishers lapped at least once.
Hamilton's victory extended his lead in the 2019 World Championship standings. The race marked Pierre Gasly's final appearance for Red Bull Racing; he was subsequently demoted to sister team Toro Rosso in a mid-season driver swap with rookie Alexander Albon, who made his Red Bull debut at the following round in Belgium.
