Widespread public dissatisfaction with incumbent President Petro Poroshenko's administration, concerns over corruption, and the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine created conditions for a political outsider to gain substantial support. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a television personality with no prior political experience, emerged as the leading challenger across 39 registered candidates.
Ukraine held a two-round presidential election beginning on 31 March 2019. No candidate secured an absolute majority in the first round, triggering a runoff on 21 April 2019 between Zelenskyy and Poroshenko. Zelenskyy won decisively with 73.22% of the total vote. The OSCE certified the elections as free and fair.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy was sworn in as Ukraine's sixth president in May 2019, becoming only the third incumbent in Ukrainian history to be defeated at reelection. Poroshenko's loss continued a pattern of single-term presidencies, while Zelenskyy's victory represented a significant realignment of Ukrainian domestic politics.
