A truck loaded with explosives crossed the Crimean Bridge, which connects Russia to Russian-occupied Crimea and serves as a critical supply route for Russian forces during the invasion of Ukraine. The Security Service of Ukraine later confirmed it organised the attack, with the stated aim of disrupting Russian logistics.
On 8 October 2022, the bomb detonated on the westbound road bridge, collapsing two two-lane vehicular spans into the water. A railway tanker car on the adjacent railway bridge caught fire, causing further damage. Five people were killed. Russia's Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation.
The explosion reduced the bridge's transport capacity, hampering Russian military resupply efforts in Crimea. Russia detained eight suspects. Ukrainian officials initially denied ordering the attack, but by mid-2023 Ukraine publicly acknowledged responsibility. The incident drew international attention as a significant strike on a symbol of Russian control over Crimea.
