Biography
Abeba Aregawi Gebretsadik, born on July 5, 1990, in Adigrat, Ethiopia, is a Swedish middle-distance runner originally from Ethiopia. Specializing in the 1,500 meters, she became one of the top athletes in this event during the early 2010s. She is married to fellow Ethiopian long-distance runner Yemane Tsegay, and together they have been associated with top-level international distance running.
Aregawi represented Ethiopia internationally until December 2012, competing for her home country in the early years of her career. She quickly made a name for herself by winning the silver medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, finishing behind Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Ethiopia. This achievement established her as a leading middle-distance runner globally.
After changing her athletic association to Sweden, Aregawi won gold in the 1,500 meters at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. Competing for Sweden, she dominated the final, securing a world title and reinforcing her status as the top 1,500m runner of that time. She set several national records for Sweden in the event, showcasing her high level of performance during her prime.
Aregawi's career included controversy. In February 2016, she was temporarily suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for meldonium, a substance newly banned that year. The case drew attention partly because many athletes claimed they were unaware of its prohibition. She was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing by the Athletics Integrity Unit due to the circumstances of the substance's ban, and her suspension was lifted.
Throughout her career, Aregawi showed the technical skill and competitive spirit that define top middle-distance runners. Her ability to switch national federations while maintaining world-class performance highlighted her talent and adaptability. She remains a significant figure in women's 1,500-meter running, part of a group of Ethiopian-born athletes who shaped global middle-distance competition in the 2010s.
Before Fame
Abeba Aregawi grew up in Adigrat, a city in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Ethiopia has long produced elite distance runners, and the country's high-altitude terrain, competitive running culture, and established training facilities helped young athletes develop quickly. Aregawi matured during a time when Ethiopian and Kenyan women were changing middle-distance running on the international scene.
She moved up through the junior and senior ranks in the late 2000s and early 2010s, a time when women's 1,500-metre competitions were becoming more competitive worldwide. Her early international appearances showed a natural talent for strategic racing and a strong finishing kick, skills that defined her style and took her to the top of the world rankings before she turned 23.
