Biography
Abel Mathías Hernández Platero was born on August 8, 1990, in Pando, Uruguay. Growing up in a country passionate about football, he showed early promise with his scoring ability and physical skills, which shaped his professional career. He started his football journey with Central Español before joining Peñarol, one of Uruguay's renowned clubs, where he developed into a professional striker.
Hernández spent five and a half seasons in Italy with Palermo, where he refined his skills in Serie A and became known as a dependable goalscorer in one of Europe's competitive leagues. His performances caught the eye of many clubs across Europe, and in September 2014, he made a notable move to Hull City in the English Championship for a club-record fee of £10 million. He consistently performed well in England, scoring goals and becoming a fan favorite at the KCOM Stadium during a lively time for the club.
In 2018, Hernández joined Russian Premier League team CSKA Moscow, continuing his career in top-level European club football. After leaving CSKA, he signed with Qatari club Al Ahli in 2019, spending about a year there before moving on. He then went to South America, joining Brazilian Série A team Internacional and later Fluminense, showing his aim to keep playing at a high level and his flexibility in different football environments.
Internationally, Hernández became a Uruguay player in 2010, earning over 30 caps. He was part of the Uruguay squad that won the 2011 Copa América, an important win in South American football. He also played for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, competing on football’s biggest stage as one of Uruguay's offensive options. His international career placed him among some of Uruguay’s most well-known football players.
After his time in Brazil, Hernández returned to Peñarol in the Uruguayan Primera División. This move was a return home for a player who spent much of his career abroad and allowed him to contribute to domestic football in Uruguay while sharing his vast experience with younger players at the club and international levels.
Before Fame
Abel Hernández grew up in Pando, a city in the Canelones department of Uruguay, not far from the capital, Montevideo. Like many young Uruguayans of his age, he was involved in football from a young age. The sport holds a special place in the country's national identity despite Uruguay's small population. He started his organized football career with Central Español, a club in Montevideo known for helping young Uruguayan talent progress.
His move to Peñarol, Uruguay's most successful club, provided Hernández with the opportunity to gain international attention. While playing in the Uruguayan Primera División in the late 2000s, he developed skills that made him effective in European soccer — aerial ability, physical strength, and a knack for scoring goals. His promising early performances led to a transfer to Palermo in Italy, where he spent nearly six years honing his abilities before becoming one of the more prominent Uruguayan strikers of his generation.
