Biography
Aliou Cissé was born on March 24, 1976, in Ziguinchor, Senegal. He developed his football career mainly in France before becoming a well-respected defensive midfielder. Known for his tenacity and leadership, Cissé earned a reputation as a commanding presence in midfield and could also play as a center-back when needed. His professional career saw him playing in several European leagues, with notable club spells in England, representing Birmingham City and Portsmouth in the Premier League and Football League.
Before Fame
Growing up in Ziguinchor, a city in Casamance, southern Senegal, Cissé experienced a time when African footballers were starting to shine in European leagues. Like many talented West African players of his time, he began his career in the French football system and soon caught the attention of more distant clubs. In the 1990s and early 2000s, many African players moved into English football, and Cissé was part of this trend, signing with Birmingham City and then Portsmouth as his career progressed.
