Andris Bērziņš, born on December 10, 1944, is a Latvian businessman and politician who was the eighth President of Latvia from 2011 to 2015. Born in the small town of Nītaure in central Latvia, Bērziņš went to Sigulda State Gymnasium before studying at Riga Technical University and the University of Latvia. This education helped him build a long career in banking and finance.

Bērziņš made a name for himself in Latvia's banking sector when the country was becoming independent and shifting to a market economy. From 1993 to 2004, he was the President of Unibanka, a major Latvian financial institution, and played a key role in developing the country's modern banking system. His leadership during this time made him a well-known figure in Latvian business and showed his skill in handling the challenges of economic change.

On June 2, 2011, Bērziņš was elected President of Latvia by the Saeima, marking his move from business to leading the country. During his presidency, which lasted until 2015, Latvia continued to join European and Atlantic institutions.
