Biography

Antonio Banderas, born José Antonio Domínguez Bandera on August 10, 1960, in Málaga, Spain, is one of the most well-known Spanish actors of his generation. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Málaga and started his career on stage. His talent caught the attention of filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, who cast him in the comedy film Labyrinth of Passion in 1982. This collaboration was crucial, leading Banderas to appear in several of Almodóvar's major films like Matador (1986), Law of Desire (1987), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989). He became a key figure in Spanish cinema before moving to Hollywood.

Banderas made his American film debut in The Mambo Kings (1992) and soon worked with major stars. He appeared in Philadelphia (1993) with Tom Hanks, Interview with the Vampire (1994) by Neil Jordan, and the musical Evita (1996) opposite Madonna. He became well-known for action roles, playing El Mariachi in Desperado (1995) and its sequel Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), and Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) and The Legend of Zorro (2005). He also voiced Puss in Boots in the Shrek series starting in 2004, continuing with sequels and spin-offs.

Outside of action and franchise films, Banderas showed his versatility. He played a father in the Spy Kids series, directed Crazy in Alabama in 1999, and portrayed Pancho Villa in the HBO film And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (2004), which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He got another Emmy nomination for his role as Pablo Picasso in the National Geographic series Genius in 2018. His stage career also thrived internationally: he debuted on Broadway in 2003 in the musical Nine, earning a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award for his performance.

A highlight of his career was his return to working with Almodóvar in Pain and Glory (2019), a film where Banderas played a filmmaker looking back on his life. This role won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, the Goya Award for Best Actor, the European Film Award for Best Actor, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In his personal life, Banderas was married to Ana Leza from 1987 to 1996, and to Melanie Griffith from 1996 to 2015.

Banderas has received several honors, including the Donostia Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival (2008), the Platino Honorary Award (2015), the European Film Academy Achievement in World Cinema Award (1999), the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (2008), and the title Dearest Son of Andalusia in 2013. His career spans more than four decades in Spanish and international cinema, TV, and theater.

Before Fame

Antonio Banderas grew up in Málaga, a port city in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, during the last years of Francisco Franco's dictatorship and the country's transition to democracy. He became interested in acting early on and studied theater at the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Málaga. Without enough money for a train ticket to Madrid to further his career, he eventually made it to the capital and started performing with a theater company.

His luck took a turn when director Pedro Almodóvar saw him on stage in Málaga and cast him in "Labyrinth of Passion" in 1982. Spain's cultural bloom after Franco, known as La Movida Madrileña, was happening, and Almodóvar was at its heart. Banderas became closely linked with this movement through their repeated collaborations, gaining recognition across Europe before Hollywood reached out in the early 1990s.
