Biography

Aristotle Socrates Onassis was born on January 20, 1906, in Smyrna (now İzmir) in the Ottoman Empire to Greek parents. His early years were marked by the upheavals of the early 1900s, including his family's flight in 1922 after Smyrna was burned during the Greco-Turkish War. He attended the Evangelical School of Smyrna and moved to Argentina in 1923 at seventeen, where he started building his business future.

In Buenos Aires, Onassis first worked as a telephone operator, then moved into the tobacco trade. His sharp business skills showed as he expanded and later entered the shipping industry during World War II. This move was crucial, as he started acquiring ships, eventually creating the world's largest privately owned shipping fleet. His fleet mainly dealt with oil tankers, and he introduced supertankers, which changed the petroleum transport industry.

Onassis moved to Monaco in the 1950s and got into a power struggle with Prince Rainier III over economic control of the region through his ownership of the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) and the Monte Carlo Casino. Around this time, he also took on big projects like oil shipping deals with Saudi Arabia and whaling ventures. In 1957, he founded Olympic Airways, turning it into Greece's national airline and increasing his influence in Greece.

Onassis's personal life drew international attention, especially his relationships with famous women. His first marriage was to Athina Mary Livanos (Tina Onassis Niarchos), and they had two children, Christina and Alexander. His well-known affair with opera singer Maria Callas was a media sensation in the 1960s. In 1968, he married Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of President John F. Kennedy, surprising the world and cementing his fame.

The last years of Onassis's life were full of business issues and personal loss. His big Project Omega, an investment plan with the Greek military junta, failed. His son Alexander's death in a plane crash in 1973 deeply affected him and his health and business. Onassis died on March 15, 1975, in Paris, leaving a $500 million business empire and a reputation as one of the 20th century's most influential business figures.

Before Fame

Aristotle Onassis was born into a wealthy Greek family in Smyrna. He enjoyed a comfortable childhood until 1922, when violent turmoil forced his family to leave their home. The burning of Smyrna and the population swaps between Greece and Turkey left them uprooted and financially strained. This early experience of loss and displacement deeply influenced Onassis’s drive for success and stability.

As a teenage refugee in Argentina with few resources and no Spanish, Onassis took on low-paying jobs while learning the language and adapting to his new surroundings. His rise from telephone operator to tobacco merchant showed his natural knack for business and his readiness to take smart risks. The growing economy of Argentina in the 1920s and 1930s created ideal opportunities for a motivated young immigrant to amass his wealth.
