Arnold Rüütel was an Estonian agricultural scientist and politician who was the third President of Estonia from 2001 to 2006. Born on 10 May 1928 in Pahavalla, Estonia, he studied at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, focusing on agricultural sciences, which influenced his early career. During the Soviet era, Rüütel worked as an academic and researcher in agriculture and gradually got involved in Estonian politics.

Rüütel's political career picked up speed in the late Soviet years, as he became a strong supporter of Estonian independence and democratic reforms. His background in agriculture and understanding of rural Estonian communities earned him respect from various parts of society.

In 2001, Rüütel became Estonia's third president, following Lennart Meri. His time in office coincided with Estonia's ongoing integration into European and Atlantic organizations, including preparing for European Union membership.
