Arnold Rüütel was an Estonian agricultural scientist and politician who was the third President of Estonia from 2001 to 2006. Born on 10 May 1928 in Pahavalla, Estonia, he studied at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, focusing on agricultural sciences, which influenced his early career. During the Soviet era, Rüütel worked as an academic and researcher in agriculture and gradually got involved in Estonian politics.
Rüütel's political career picked up speed in the late Soviet years, as he became a strong supporter of Estonian independence and democratic reforms. He was key in Estonia's move from Soviet control to independence, helping to tackle the political challenges of the early 1990s. His background in agriculture and understanding of rural Estonian communities earned him respect from various parts of society.
In 2001, Rüütel became Estonia's third president, following Lennart Meri. His time in office coincided with Estonia's ongoing integration into European and Atlantic organizations, including preparing for European Union membership. As president from 8 October 2001 to 9 October 2006, he worked to strengthen Estonia's international ties and support its democratic institutions.
Throughout his career, Rüütel received many international honors for his efforts in Estonian independence and European cooperation. These included the Order of Lenin from Soviet times, as well as the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav from Norway in 2002, the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Falcon, and other awards from Latvia, Romania, and Estonia itself. He was married to Ingrid Rüütel and stayed active in Estonian public life until he passed away in Tallinn on 31 December 2024.
