Biography

Barham Salih, an Iraqi-Kurdish politician, was born on September 8, 1960, in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. He studied at Cardiff University and the University of Liverpool in the UK, experiences that later influenced his political work. Salih got involved in Kurdish politics early on through the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), serving as the second deputy secretary general.

Salih held several key positions in both regional and Iraqi federal government. He was Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, handling the autonomous region's affairs during tough times. This regional experience helped prepare him for larger roles, leading to his position as Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq's federal government, where he worked to ease tensions between Kurdish and Arab political factions.

On October 2, 2018, Salih became President of Iraq, the country's third non-Arab president in modern times. His term was marked by major challenges like security issues, economic troubles, and political unrest. He followed Fuad Masum, another Kurdish politician, keeping Kurdish representation at Iraq's highest ceremonial level. Throughout his time as president, Salih aimed to promote national unity and address the diverse needs of Iraq's population.

Salih's presidency ended in October 2022 when he lost the re-election to Abdul Latif Rashid. After his presidency, he moved into international work, becoming the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on January 1, 2026. This role utilized his extensive experience with displacement issues, reflective of Iraq’s past struggles with population movements. His career path includes regional Kurdish politics, Iraqi national leadership, and international humanitarian efforts.

Before Fame

Growing up in Sulaymaniyah during the 1960s and 1970s, Salih saw the rise of Kurdish political awareness in Iraq under tough conditions. The Kurdish population faced ongoing oppression from different Iraqi governments, which spurred organized political movements pushing for autonomy and rights. This setting shaped Salih's early political awareness and dedication to Kurdish causes.

When he decided to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom, he gained exposure to democratic institutions and global views on governance. This educational experience set him apart from many of his peers, giving him the analytical skills and broader perspective that would be valuable in his later political negotiations and diplomatic work.
