Biography

Irakli Kobakhidze, born on September 25, 1978, in Tbilisi, is a Georgian lawyer and politician who has been serving as the 16th Prime Minister of Georgia since February 2024. He studied law at Tbilisi State University and later at the University of Düsseldorf in Germany. Before entering the political arena, Kobakhidze worked as a professor at Tbilisi State University and engaged with Western-funded NGOs. His academic career laid the groundwork for his involvement in politics with the Georgian Dream party.

Kobakhidze began his political journey with the Georgian Dream party, serving in the Georgian Parliament from 2016 to 2024. During this time, he was the sixth Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia from 2016 to 2019, becoming a key figure in the ruling party. He also participated in international forums, serving as vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 2020 to 2022. In 2021, he became the chairman of Georgian Dream, a role he held until 2024 before taking it up again in 2025.

As Prime Minister, Kobakhidze's time in office has been marked by rising tensions with Western countries and accusations of Georgia moving away from democratic principles. His government has faced criticism for policies that have strained Georgia's ties with the European Union and the United States. As a result, the United States has imposed sanctions on Kobakhidze and other government members, accusing them of undermining democratic institutions in Georgia.

Kobakhidze is known for promoting what critics call conspiracy theories, especially the "Global War Party" idea, and for making statements seen as anti-Western. He often accuses Western nations of trying to involve Georgia in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite being Prime Minister, many political analysts believe that he is heavily influenced by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the billionaire founder of Georgian Dream, who is thought to be the real power behind Georgia's government. This has raised questions about how much independent power Kobakhidze actually has in running the country.

Before Fame

Growing up in post-Soviet Tbilisi during the 1990s, Kobakhidze saw Georgia's struggle for independence and the civil conflicts that followed. His early years were marked by Georgia's move away from Soviet rule, economic troubles, and efforts to build democratic institutions. Living through these significant changes likely shaped his later political views and approach to governance.

He started his academic journey at Tbilisi State University, studying law, and then continued his education in Germany at the University of Düsseldorf. This international experience introduced him to European legal traditions and political systems. When he returned to Georgia, he worked as a university professor and got involved with civil society organizations, many of which were funded by Western sources during Georgia's early democratization phase.
