Biography
Gabrielle Bonheur 'Coco' Chanel (1883-1971) was a French fashion designer and businesswoman who changed women's fashion in the 20th century. Born in Saumur, she rose from modest beginnings to become the founder of the globally recognized Chanel brand, becoming one of the most influential people in fashion history. She introduced a new approach to women's clothing, focusing on comfort, elegance, and practicality, and moved away from the corseted, restrictive styles common in the early 1900s.
Chanel started her career in the early 20th century by opening her first boutique in Paris. She quickly became known for her innovative designs that freed women from the elaborate fashions of the Victorian era. Her creation of the little black dress, Chanel suit, and use of jersey fabric in women's wear challenged traditional ideas of feminine attire. She also expanded her business to include accessories, jewelry, and especially fragrance. Chanel No. 5, launched in 1921, became one of the world's most famous perfumes and remains a key part of the brand today.
During World War II, Chanel's life became controversial. She closed her couture house in 1939 and stayed in Paris during the Nazi occupation. Declassified documents later showed her collaboration with German intelligence and her romantic relationship with Baron Hans Günther von Dincklage, a German diplomat and spy. Despite investigations into her wartime actions, she avoided prosecution, reportedly due to Winston Churchill's intervention.
After the war, Chanel went to Switzerland but made a strong comeback in 1954 at age 71. Initially met with skepticism, she successfully regained her influence in the industry. She continued working until she died on January 10, 1971, at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, where she had lived for many years. Her contributions to fashion earned her many awards, including the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1957, and Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
Before Fame
Gabrielle Chanel, before becoming famous, had a tough childhood filled with poverty and abandonment. After her mother died when she was 12, her father left her and her siblings in an orphanage run by nuns, where she learned to sew. As a young adult, she worked as a seamstress and briefly tried her luck as a cabaret singer, where she got the nickname 'Coco.'
She entered the fashion world with the help of wealthy men who supported her financially and introduced her to the right social circles. Arthur 'Boy' Capel, an English polo player and businessman, played a key role in helping her set up her first boutique at 21 rue Cambon in Paris in 1910. This time was marked by big social changes in Europe, as women were starting to demand more practical clothing for their more active lives and new jobs.
