Biography

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, widely known as Diogo Jota, was born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal. A professional footballer who played as a forward and winger, he became a standout attacker of his time, recognized for his finishing, speed, dribbling skills, and hard work across the front line. He played for clubs in Portugal, Spain, and England before he died on July 3, 2025, in Zamora Province, Spain, in a car accident that also took the life of his brother André Silva.

Jota's professional journey began with Paços de Ferreira in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. In 2016, he caught the eye of Atlético Madrid, signing with the La Liga club before being loaned back to Porto and then to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. His stint at Wolverhampton was pivotal for both him and the club. His goals and playmaking helped the Midlands team earn promotion to the Premier League, and he was permanently signed in 2018 for around €14 million. Over 131 matches, Jota scored 44 goals for Wolverhampton, becoming one of the league's most dangerous forwards.

In September 2020, Liverpool's manager, Jürgen Klopp, brought Jota to the team for about £41 million. This move led to the most successful period of his career. At Liverpool, he fit in perfectly with the team's high-energy style, scoring from various attacking positions. Over five seasons, he played 182 games and scored 65 goals, contributing to wins in the FA Cup and two EFL Cup finals. His last season ended with winning the Premier League title in 2025, a highlight of his club career.

On the international stage, Jota moved up through the youth levels to make his senior debut for Portugal in November 2019. He played in two UEFA European Championships, in 2020 and 2024, although he missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to a major injury. He earned international success with Portugal in the UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025, becoming a key player for one of Europe's top national teams.

Jota and his brother André Silva died on July 3, 2025, in a car crash in Zamora Province, Spain. Jota was 28 years old. His death led to a wave of tributes from across the football world, with Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Portuguese Football Federation, and numerous clubs and players expressing their condolences. He is survived by his partner Rute Cardoso and their three children.

Before Fame

Diogo Jota grew up in Porto, one of Portugal's great football cities and home to one of the country's historic clubs. From a young age, he honed his skills in an environment focused on technical ability and competitive intensity. He joined the academy at Paços de Ferreira, a club known for producing skilled players, and worked his way up to professional football.

His early career aligned with an exciting time for Portuguese football, with the national team winning Euro 2016 and producing a generation of talented forwards who would succeed in Europe's top leagues. Jota's direct running, smart movement, and knack for scoring set him apart, attracting interest from abroad while he was still a teenager and paving the way for a career that would take him to the top of English football.
