Biography
Željko Komšić is a Bosnian Croat politician, diplomat, and lawyer who has been the Croat member of Bosnia and Herzegovina's three-person presidency multiple times since 2006. Born on January 20, 1964, in Sarajevo, Komšić earned his law degree from the University of Sarajevo in 1988. He later went to Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service for further studies in diplomacy and international relations.
During the Bosnian War (1992-1995), Komšić served in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was awarded the Order of the Golden Lily, one of Bosnia's top military honors. After the war, he worked at the Federal Ministry of Displaced Persons and Refugees, dealing with the humanitarian crisis that impacted many Bosnians during and after the conflict.
Komšić started his political career at the local level, becoming the mayor of Novo Sarajevo in 2000. He later served as Bosnia and Herzegovina's ambassador to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, gaining diplomatic experience that influenced his future political roles. In 2006, he won the Croat seat in Bosnia's presidency as a member of the Social Democratic Party, beginning his first term.
After serving two terms from 2006 to 2014, Komšić was in the national House of Representatives from 2014 to 2018. During this time, he left the Social Democratic Party in 2012 and started the Democratic Front in 2013. He returned to the presidency in 2018 for a third term and was re-elected in 2022 for a fourth term. This makes him the longest-serving presidency member in Bosnia's post-war era and the only person to serve more than two terms in this role.
Komšić's career has stirred controversy among Bosnian Croats. Although elected as the Croat member of the presidency, he has consistently received more support from Bosniak voters than from Croats, leading some Bosnian Croats to view him as not truly representing their interests. This voting pattern highlights Bosnia's complex constitutional system, where voters can select both the Bosniak and Croat presidency members, leading to cross-ethnic voting that has shaped Komšić's political journey.
Before Fame
Growing up in Sarajevo during the Yugoslav era, Komšić was shaped by a multiethnic environment that would later influence his political views. He was studying law at the University of Sarajevo when the war broke out in 1992, and he had to serve in the territorial defense forces.
His rise in politics resulted from his service during the war and his later work in rebuilding efforts. At the Federal Ministry of Displaced Persons and Refugees, he played a key role in Bosnia's recovery process. His diplomatic assignment to Yugoslavia gave him international experience that set him apart from many local politicians.
