Biography
Miralem Pjanić, born on April 2, 1990, is a retired Bosnian footballer who played as a midfielder. Born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pjanić is often regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation and among the top free-kick takers in football history. His technical skill, vision, and precise passing made him a key playmaker for some of Europe's top clubs.
Pjanić started his professional career at FC Metz in France, spending one season there before moving to Lyon in 2008. His time at Lyon confirmed his status as a promising young talent, leading to a move to AS Roma in 2011. During his time in Rome, Pjanić became one of Serie A's top midfielders, known for his creative play and skillful set-pieces. Juventus noticed his performances and signed him in 2016.
At Juventus, Pjanić was a vital part of the team's success, winning four Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia trophies. He was named to the Serie A Team of the Year for four straight seasons from 2015-16 to 2018-19. In the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League, he was included in the Squad of the Season, contributing to Juventus's run to the final. In September 2020, Pjanić moved to FC Barcelona in a major transfer, but his time there was less successful, leading to a loan to Turkish club Beşiktaş.
Later in his career, Pjanić joined Sharjah FC in the UAE Pro League in 2022, followed by a stint with CSKA Moscow in the Russian Premier League in 2024. He announced his retirement in 2025, closing out a nearly two-decade-long career. Internationally, Pjanić represented Bosnia and Herzegovina with pride, earning 115 caps and scoring 18 goals between 2008 and 2024. He played a key role in Bosnia's qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, their first major tournament, and remained a central figure for his national team throughout his career.
Before Fame
Born in Tuzla during a challenging time in Bosnia, Pjanić's family moved to Luxembourg when he was young in search of better opportunities. He first played for Luxembourg in youth internationals before deciding to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at the senior level. He started his football training in Luxembourg's youth system, eventually getting noticed by French club FC Metz.
The late 2000s were a great time for technical midfielders in European football, with stars like Xavi, Andrea Pirlo, and Kaká raising the playmaking bar. Pjanić came onto the scene during this period, honing his skills in France's youth academies that focused on technical ability and tactical intelligence. This experience in the French football system gave him the foundation to compete at the top levels of European football.
