Biography

Gerard Piqué Bernabeu was born on February 2, 1987, in Barcelona, Spain. He grew up in a family closely linked to FC Barcelona, with his grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, serving as vice-president of the club. This connection to Catalan football significantly influenced him from an early age. Piqué attended La Salle Bonanova in Barcelona before moving to England, where he continued his studies at Ashton-on-Mersey School while also pursuing his football career with Manchester United. This mix of education and top-level sports training made him a well-rounded young professional.

Piqué joined Barcelona's well-known La Masia academy as a youth player before moving to Manchester United in 2004. At Old Trafford, he was part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League in the 2007–08 season, becoming one of the few players to have won the competition with two different clubs. He returned to FC Barcelona in 2008 for around four million euros, a move that turned out to be pivotal for the club. At Barcelona, he formed a strong defensive partnership and became a key player in one of the most successful club teams ever.

With Barcelona, Piqué won numerous honors, including nine La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies, and was part of the treble-winning teams of 2008–09 and 2014–15. He made 616 appearances for the club and was considered one of the best defenders of his time. Internationally, he earned 102 caps for Spain, debuting on February 11, 2009. He played an important role in Spain's wins at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and UEFA Euro 2012. He retired from international football after the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His individual honors include the Don Balón Award in 2009 and multiple selections to the UEFA Team of the Year, along with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit.

Piqué retired from professional football in October 2022, ending his playing career at Barcelona amid personal and club changes. Even before retiring, he was actively building his business career. In 2022, he founded the Kings League, a new seven-a-side football competition in Spain that later expanded to several regions. The league made use of streaming, viewer interaction, and social media in ways that set it apart from traditional competitions, attracting millions of viewers and a lot of commercial interest.

Before Fame

Growing up in Barcelona, Piqué was surrounded by football from a young age, with family ties to FC Barcelona. He joined the club's La Masia academy, the same youth system that produced Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez, receiving thorough technical and tactical training alongside his general education. His early education at La Salle Bonanova in Barcelona gave him a solid academic base before his football ambitions took him abroad.

At seventeen, Piqué decided to join Manchester United, moving to England and enrolling at Ashton-on-Mersey School while training with one of Europe's top clubs. This time abroad gave him new experiences and introduced him to a different football culture under manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Although his first-team chances at United were limited, he won the Champions League in 2008 and gained the physical and tactical skills that would shape his later career at Barcelona.
