Biography

Goran Dragić was born on May 6, 1986, in Ljubljana, which at that time was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and is now the capital of Slovenia. Known as 'the Dragon,' he honed his basketball skills in the Slovenian league before heading to Spain for tougher competition. He entered the NBA in 2008 and played mostly with the Phoenix Suns and the Miami Heat, becoming one of the top European point guards of his generation during a 15-season career.

Dragić started with the Phoenix Suns and had two separate stints with them. In his second period with the team, he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 2014, averaging career-high numbers and proving capable as a central player rather than just a backup. That success quieted critics. In 2015, he was traded to the Miami Heat, marking the longest stretch of his NBA career.

In Miami, Dragić became a team leader and earned his only NBA All-Star spot in 2018. He played a major role in the Heat’s unexpected journey to the NBA Finals in the 2019–20 season held in Orlando due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although he tore his plantar fascia during the Finals, he played through the pain, showing toughness and determination—qualities that defined his time with Miami.

After finishing with the Heat, Dragić played for several teams towards the end of his career, including the Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks. Though age reduced his role, he remained a respected veteran presence in locker rooms throughout the league. His final years in the NBA showed him balancing the demands of a long career while still contributing effectively.

Internationally, Dragić reached the peak of his career in 2017 when he led Slovenia to its first-ever FIBA EuroBasket championship. He was named MVP of the tournament after an impressive performance. He ranks second in all-time points scored for the Slovenian national team and played in 90 international games. His efforts boosted Slovenian basketball and inspired a new generation of players, including Luka Dončić.

Before Fame

Goran Dragić grew up in Ljubljana during a time of major change, as Slovenia became independent from Yugoslavia in 1991, when he was just five. He matured in a newly independent nation that was building its institutions, including its sports facilities. Basketball was already popular in the former Yugoslav republics, and Dragić developed his skills in that setting, eventually playing professionally in the Slovenian league as a teenager.

Before joining the NBA, Dragić improved his game in Spain, playing for Tau Cerámica in the Liga ACB, one of Europe's top basketball leagues. This experience gave him valuable exposure to high-level professional play and tactical skills, preparing him for the NBA's challenges. He was picked 45th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2008 NBA Draft and was quickly traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he started his professional career in North America.
