Biography

Joel Hans Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Standing 7 feet tall, he first played volleyball and soccer before discovering basketball at age 15. His athletic talent drew the attention of scouts, leading to his enrollment at Montverde Academy in Florida, where he honed his basketball skills. After a successful prep career, Embiid committed to the University of Kansas, playing one season with the Jayhawks before declaring for the NBA draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers picked Embiid third overall in the 2014 NBA draft, but foot and knee injuries kept him off the court for two full seasons. He finally made his NBA debut during the 2016-17 season, playing only 31 games but earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. During this time, he adopted the nickname 'the Process,' embracing the 76ers' rebuilding strategy that started around the time he joined. His delayed start became part of his identity, with fans eagerly waiting to see his full potential.

Once Embiid was consistently healthy, his career took off. He became a seven-time NBA All-Star and earned five All-NBA Team selections, establishing himself as one of the league's top centers. His ability to score with both post moves and three-point shots sets him apart from traditional big men. He led the NBA in scoring during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, becoming the first center since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000 to do so and the first center since Moses Malone in 1982 to average over 30 points per game.

Embiid's greatest individual achievement came in 2023 when he was named NBA Most Valuable Player, recognizing his dominance on both offense and defense. His defensive skills earned him three All-Defensive Team selections, and his scoring titles made him the first foreign-born player to lead the NBA in scoring. Alongside these individual awards, Embiid represented the United States at the 2024 Olympics, winning a gold medal despite being born in Cameroon. His choice to play for Team USA reflected his American citizenship and connection to the country where he built his basketball career. Throughout his career, injuries have been a concern, but when healthy, Embiid has consistently shown why he is considered among the top players in professional basketball.

Before Fame

Growing up in Yaoundé, Embiid initially focused on volleyball and soccer, which are more common in Cameroon than basketball. He only started playing basketball at age 15, when his height and athleticism made him a natural fit for the sport. Recognizing his potential opened up opportunities to train in the United States, where basketball development resources were much better than those in Cameroon.

His journey to success picked up speed at Montverde Academy, a Florida prep school known for developing international basketball talent. Moving from Cameroon to American basketball culture required major adjustments, but Embiid improved quickly, catching the attention of top college programs. His single season at the University of Kansas showed enough promise that NBA teams were eager to draft him despite his limited experience compared to players born in the U.S.
