Biography

Guillermo David Endara Galimany was born on May 12, 1936, in Panama City, Panama. Raised in a family closely connected to the Panameñista Party and its founder Arnulfo Arias, Endara spent parts of his early life in exile in the United States and Argentina after Arias was overthrown in 1941. He finished high school at the Black-Foxe Military Institute in the United States before returning to Panama, where he earned a law degree from the University of Panama. He continued his legal studies at New York University, becoming one of Panama's prominent legal and political figures of his time.

Before Fame

Endara's early political development was closely tied to the tumultuous career of Arnulfo Arias, whose Panameñista Party shaped Panamanian opposition politics for decades. During his youth, Endara lived in exile because of Arias's removal from power, fostering a personal connection to the fight against authoritarianism. After completing his legal education, he served in Panama's National Assembly and held a ministerial position briefly, gaining experience before being exiled again after Arias was overthrown for the third time in 1968. These repeated disruptions shaped his political identity focused on resisting military interference in government. After Arias died in 1988, Endara became a leading opposition figure, stepping into the role left by his mentor when Panama was under General Manuel Noriega's increasingly harsh military dictatorship.
