Biography
Iker Casillas Fernández was born on May 20, 1981, in Móstoles, a city in the Community of Madrid, Spain. Known as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, fans nicknamed him 'San Iker' for his incredible saves. His athleticism, quick reflexes, and ability to consistently stop shots made him stand out during his more than 20-year professional career.
Casillas joined Real Madrid's youth academy as a child and made it to the first team in 1999, quickly proving to be an exceptional talent. At just 19 years and four days old, he became the youngest goalkeeper to play in and win the UEFA Champions League final, showing just how fast he rose in the sport. Over the years, he won numerous honors with Real Madrid, including five La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two Copa del Rey titles, four Supercopa de España titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He captained the team impressively and became one of its iconic figures during his 25-year association with the club.
On the international stage, Casillas led Spain during one of the most successful periods any national team has had. He holds the record for the most clean sheets with the Spain national team and earned 167 caps, making him the second most capped Spanish player ever. His leadership was key to Spain's win at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012, marking a streak of international success. His on-camera kiss with then-girlfriend, journalist Sara Carbonero, right after Spain's World Cup win, became one of the most famous images in football history. The couple later married.
In 2015, after disagreements with Real Madrid's management regarding his starting role, Casillas joined FC Porto in Portugal on a free transfer. His time in Porto was successful at the club level, securing a Primeira Liga title and a Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. He also set the record for most consecutive seasons in the UEFA Champions League and became the player with the most appearances in the tournament, reaching 177 matches. His time at Porto was cut short in May 2019 when he suffered a heart attack during training, an event that prompted support from across the football world. He officially retired from professional football in February 2020.
After retiring, Casillas moved into the media, working as a football commentator and analyst for networks like RTVE, Movistar Plus+, and Azteca Deportes. He received many awards during his career, including the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award in 2008, the Bravo Award in 2000, the Golden Foot in 2017, and national honors including the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Sports Merit.
